Wand Discussion Group - Selaria
April 10, 2001
Selaria says: welp, I'm going to go ahead and get started
Selaria says: I'd like to thank each of you for coming in tonight and I hope that you enjoy the discussion. For those of you familiar with the wand, please feel free to interject your knowledge during the appropriate headings of discussion.
Selaria exclaims: For those of you brand new to the wand, or have not had the *pleasure* of being the user/usee of a wand, do ask questions! But anyway as I said, this is a high-level, semi-formal discussion tonight, a little Violet Wand 101 covering the basic history, safety, uses and attachments so sit back, plug in and enjoy!
Selaria says: I tend to be a bit techie when it comes to the interworkings, because those are the kind of things I love knowing about.. so beware ;) I will provide references towards the end if you want to do some more of your own scrounging for information.
Selaria asks: so any questions so far before we get into the nitty gritty?
Selaria will take that as a no
Selaria says: I'm going to start out with the history.. funny how that always comes first.. ;)
Selaria says: The person primarily responsible for the inception of the Violet Wand was a brilliant man by the name of Nikolas Tesla. Tesla invented the alternating-current generator (AC) that provides your light, electricity, and the transformer through which it is sent.
Selaria says: The Tesla Coil, is a coil that disrupts electrical flow into small particles, when the electrical charge travels through gas-filled glass tubes (Argon for purple), it emerges in purple rays of small ionically charged particles.
Selaria grins, see? I told you I was techi'ish ;)
jenna grins
Selaria says: During the 1920/30s, the wand was primarily used in a medical setting for the mentally challenged (shock therapy), and skin and scalp diseases.
Selaria exclaims: Today, a modified coil is used in radios, television sets, remote controls (yum) and a wide-range of other electronic equipment. Its' most important use of course, is in the violet wand!;)
Selaria sighs happily and dreams of remote controlled vibrators coupled with a buzzing wand, and deeply breathes in the smell of ozone
Selaria says: oooo.. sorry, scuse me
Selaria winks
Renee laughs
Selaria pushes her glasses back up on her nose and clears her throat.
Selaria says: The house-hold voltage used is around 55-65 Hz (115-125 volts). What the wand does is takes this voltage and converts it through the coil increasing the frequency at which the energy cycles.
Selaria says: It increases it so much that it enters the range of Radio Frequency Radiation (anywhere from 3kHz to 300 gigaHz, depending on the coil).
Selaria says: Because the high voltage produced by the wand is at a high frequency, a phenomenon occurs that is called the "skin effect"
Selaria says: The Skin Effect, very simply put, states that as the frequency of the current increases, it's ability to penetrate into a resistor decreases. Another way to look at it is drag your feet across the carpet and touch your cat. ;)
Selaria giggles
Selaria says: (i love doing that too)
Renee shakes her head laughing
Selaria says: Most wands operate with an electrical impulse around 450-500 kHz. The human skin has an average resistance of around 40-50 ohms, which means that the electrical charge a Tesla coil will only penetrate the skin between .05-1.0 cms.
Selaria says: This is far from any of your needed organs and what makes this type of electrical play relatively safe..
Selaria grins
Selaria asks: Okie, I know that this is probably a lot more than you ever wanted to know about the interworkings of the wand.. but are there any questions so far?
Changeling says: Too many... some other time.
Selaria laughs and nods at Changeling (Thanks, I think.)
Renee says: nope.
Selaria exclaims: Okie, now, what are the fun things to do with all these currents and Hzs? We're on to safety, techniques, and attachments.. these will all intermingle, so keep up!
Selaria says: From this point on, I will refer to the one that uses the wand as the user, and the one the wand is used on, as the usee
Selaria says: rather than try to stay within a top/bottom dom/sub sense
Selaria says: What makes the wand so much fun is how relatively safe it is (with proper user of course). The electricity never comes into direct contact with the usee.
Selaria says: The sensations produced can be manipulated from the very subtle to the extremely intense.
Selaria says: Exchanging the electrodes and varying the intensity of the wand via the control knob achieves this wide variety of sensation and textures we wand sluts love ;)
Selaria says: The glass electrodes supply a gap between the wand and the final electrical output which serves as a secondary safety feature of the wand.
Selaria says: This is a safety feature you should look for in purchasing a wand, and is commonly referred to as "spark gap isolation".
Selaria grins
Selaria says: Now, some common sense safety items - (one would think at least).
Selaria says: Keep in mind as we discuss attachments and their uses, that the farther away from the skin an attachment is, the sharper the shock, the closer it is, the tingly it becomes (I think at least).
Selaria says: for play, , I remove all jewelry, eye contacts, eye glasses..everything.
Selaria says: Now, I know some of you have body piercings, and I know of some people that play with their body piercings in
Selaria says: I don't have any experience in this area, so if someone does, please speak up.
Selaria says: But the reason I remove all jewelry is that the electricity can 'arc' to those areas were metal exists and make it really intense and in rare instances can cause burns.
Renee says: I have a tongue ring, and play with it in.
Selaria asks: yes Beau?
Selaria nods to REnee
Beau says: it's best not to touch the metal ring or whatever... but safe to play near it
Beau says: it doesn't need to be remover
Renee says: But then again...ya don't get too near the tongue thing.
Selaria nods. If it does touch the ring, I'm sure it's noticable?
Selaria nods
Beau says: yes, that's true
Selaria says: Okie.. great information.
Selaria asks: Beau, does it go the same for clit/nipple rings?
Beau says: yes, I once touched a nipple ring, (by request), she had a nipple erection for 2 days :)
Selaria exclaims: oh wow!
Selaria says: heh
Selaria will keep that in mind
Selaria giggles
Beau grins
Selaria asks: Anyone have anything else to add for piercings?
Beau says: stay away from a clit ring
Selaria says: ooo
Beau says: or any other "wet" area
Selaria says: Well, I play vaginally (no insertion), but I don't have a ring either.
Selaria grins, and I *love* it ;)
Beau nods ans smiles
Selaria asks: Now, should you use your wand on your favorite little subby while she/he is immersed in the bathtub?
Selaria taps her fingers and looks around
Selaria says: Well, the obvious answer is FUCK NO.. not if you want to play with them again.
Renee laughs
Selaria says: Wands and liquids do not mix (other than isopropyl alcohol maybe, but that is an advanced technique and will not be covered here tonight).
Selaria says: - Yes, you can also do fireplay with a wand, and even do wand branding, but those are more topics not covered tonight.
Selaria grins, those are for advanced users only :)
Selaria says: Always test the intensity of the wand setting on yourself (the user). If it's too much for you, it's too much to start out with on your usee.
Beau did that Sat night even :)
Selaria grins
Selaria exclaims: you'll have to tell us about that when we're done! I'd love to hear about it ;)
Beau says: sure thing
Selaria exclaims: You can always start low and then go for the big bang. Also keep in mind, different wands will behave or work differently. Always test first!
Selaria says: (start low in the settings)
Selaria says: Never use the wand above the neck, even though some wands are certified by the FDA as acceptable to do so, its just one of my limits that it doesn't go above the neck (some people don't go above the waist).
Selaria exclaims: Above the neck is my own preference and usually preach for others to do the same. So don't do it!
Selaria turns up her wand and drools some more
Selaria says: (sorry, I'm lagged)
Renee asks: ?
Selaria exclaims: yes!
Selaria asks: Renee?
Renee says: This may be ahead of teh game...but, the no head rule...I have kissed the user when s/he has been "live".
Selaria grins, it's ahead of the game ;)
Beau grins at Renee
Renee says: kay sowwy.
Selaria asks: Preferrably for the direct connect application? I wouldn't put a wand on someone's forehead.
Selaria says: What you are talking about is e indirect application ;)
Selaria says: I cover that a little bit, but it's a great point to make
Selaria asks: Everyone else okie so far?
Renee says: Okay..difference noted.
Selaria says: k
Selaria exclaims: Remember, most of the attachments are made out of very thin glass.. don't put them into any orifices!
Selaria asks: Can you imagine going to the ER and explaining why you need this glass tube removed from your ass?
Selaria says: Save yourself the hassle and don't stick 'em IN anywhere.
Selaria says: Again, there are sites and vendors that say they sell 'insertables'.. all I ask is that when something bad goes wrong, you please email me your story so I can laugh and make fun of you and use you as an example. (just kidding, it's the masochist in me).
Selaria smiles smugly. But seriously, some people do do this, and do use insertables successfully. I myself am just leery of this.
Selaria says: Don't use the wand for long periods of time in the same area.
Selaria says: The wand gives off ultraviolet light and can burn the skin (aka the branding we aren't going to talk about)., and the smell of burnt skin probably won't help the scene (unless that's what you're going for).
Selaria grins
Selaria sighs happily
Selaria asks: if your wand comes with three prongs on the cord?
Beau nods
Selaria asks: you know, the part that plugs into the wall?
Selaria says: Don't remove the third GROUNDING prong. If you're going to do that.. go ahead and stick 'em in the bathtub and. But seriously, the third prong is there for a reason. Leave it.
Selaria says: Also, if you need an extention cord, use it, but make sure it's compatible with the wand. If anything, go the distance and use a surge protector or power strip. Remember, you ARE using electricity, please take the necessarily precautions.
Selaria says: and this is my favorite ;)...
Selaria says: Last but not least, - Never open up your Violet Wand's casing. The primary coil carries line voltage which can kill you. If I need to expand on this uhm.. here's a fork and there's the wall socket.
Selaria says: I actually saw someone do this, with a screw driver no less.. it was quite entertaining.
Skittles says: It's like a monitor does it hold a charg for months after it's unplugged
endeavor smiles
Skittles says: I hope the handle was plastic
Selaria asks: are you asking Skittles, or making a statement?
Skittles says: asking
Selaria says: he got a jolt
Selaria asks: I'm not for sure actually.. do you know Beau? about it holding a charge for months?
Skittles says: Is it even
Selaria says: I've never heard of it myself
Beau says: yes, it's caled "capacitance
Selaria exclaims: ah, cool!! learn something new everyday!
Beau says: similar to an old tube type tv
Selaria says: makes sense
Beau says: the tesla coil inside holds the charge
Selaria nods
Selaria asks: does that answer your question, Skittles? :)
Selaria asks: Actually, does anyone else have any questions concerning the basic safety issues we've covered?
Skittles says: yup
Renee says: nope
Changeling asks: Suncream for UV protection?
Selaria laughs
Selaria says: That could be interesting.. but I doubt anyone would go to those lengths.. its very little.. it's only apparent if used for long periods of time in the same spot.
Beau says: using lotion afterwards is good, and a nice aftercare too
Selaria nods to Beau (it's very nice).
Selaria asks: anyone else?
Skittles thinks . o 0 (SunScream)
Selaria grins
Selaria says: Now for some of the fun stuff - Of course, as most of you know, I'm sincerely biased when it comes to wands and have affectionately been called a wand slut/whore (it all fits) *beams*.
Beau smiles at selaria
Selaria exclaims: some of my friends will attest (I use the friend term loosely here, but hey! I have loose friends), they will try to tell you I have a "pom-pom".
Selaria exclaims: don't believe it!
Selaria exclaims: It *is* a tinsel flogger! Let me tell you all something (and this is giving away a secret). When this is used.. it's a direct connect to my clit. It is OUT of this world!
Selaria composes herself and sits prettily.
Renee drools over Selaria's tinsel flogger
Selaria grins and nods
Selaria says: Now, if you get a tinsel flogger, make sure it's made out of flexible mylar
Selaria says: what makes it conduscive is that copper wire is woven into the base of the strands (usually over a leather/suede handle) and then, wrapped around the handle of the flogger to insure ease of use.
Selaria says: at least the ones I've seen/used.
Selaria says: Just grasp the violet wand in one hand or use a body contact probe, hold the flogger in your other hand, touching any part of the copper wire on the tinsel flogger.
Selaria says: The charge flows over the users body, into the wire, through the flogger, electrifying the tails and and and and and and.. oo OO Oo.. oh, scuse me.
Selaria fans herself
Selaria exclaims: I get excited just talking about it!
Changeling asks: ?
Selaria says: The attachments that can go with a wand are incredible, and its because of these things that I imho believe that the wand is the most versatile of all all all toys. *drool*.
Renee hands Selaria a glass of water
Selaria asks: yes Changeling?
Selaria grins at Renee.. my thanks.
Changeling asks: I take it you can't use it on yourself that way?
Selaria says: well
Selaria says: you would then be getting into a reverse application, where you would be getting the electricity from the inside out.. and while this is a great way to play (depending on the body pad/attachments).. I would never suggest playing with this type of toy alone.. ever.
Selaria says: So, no. :)
Selaria grins
Selaria asks: any other questions?
Selaria takes a deep swig of ice cold water and turns her wand back up another notch..
Selaria says: Because there are so many attachments, I'm just going to touch on a couple and then leave you to your own device to find more.
Selaria says: The first is the body contact probe (which we mentioned with the tinsel flogger). This, quite simply allows the user to become the wand.
Selaria says: this is the application Renee.. in which you were talking about more than likely
Renee nods
Renee says: Yeppers
Selaria says: Most of the body contact probes I've seen is an insulated wire (almost looks like a steel dildo), that the user either holds or places somewhere on their body becoming a conductee.
Selaria says: This application is also referred to an "indirect application". A person is the conductee, rather than an attachment.
Selaria asks: Just imagine a tongue that buzzes, or fingers that tingle as they are dragged across a clit? It's extraordinary. *sigh*.. excuse me this is just so exciting..
Selaria squirms
Renee swoons
Selaria nodsnodsnodsnods
Selaria asks: Put me under a wand, and I'm goo (can you tell?)
Selaria grins.. where were we.. ooo.. k.. attachments.
Renee relates to Selaria's goo state
Selaria refocuses.
Selaria says: Another two attachments are the mushroom and the rake. The mushroom does look like an inverted mushroom cap made out of glass attached to a glass tube.
Selaria says: This is good for little delicate spots like nipples and clits and scrotums and and.. I know I know.
Selaria says: Oh, also.. touching a person directly with an attachment is commonly referred to the "direct application".
Selaria says: as we've stated so far.. these are the basic three types of touch.. direct, indirect and reverse. :)
Selaria exclaims: anyway.. attachments! (so many tangents, so little time)
Selaria says: The rake looks just like a little glass rake with rounded tips. This attachment is also made out of glass and is good for a multiple sensations.\
Selaria says: Most of all the glass attachments are filled with the Argon gas, which again gives its violet color.
Selaria says: There are some glass attachments that are filled with other gasses giving off other colors, like red or blue. These are harder to find and will run you more.
Selaria exclaims: butg they are sooo pretty!
Renee says: Hhhmmm. I did not know that.
Selaria says: As some of you are beginning to see, the possibilities are endless.
Selaria says: The Whartenburg wheel can be used which creates a very focused sensation, as well as use a wire brush. Each attachment opens up its own realm of possibilities.
Renee says: And endless, and endless, and endless.
Selaria grins nodding.. it's so fantastic
Selaria says: When trying a new attachment or finding things to use be it the glass attachments or metals , please RESEARCH their compatibility to the wand.
Renee says: Snare drum sticks are fun too.
Selaria says: oooooo
Selaria says: good idea
Beau !
Selaria makes a note
Selaria asks: yes Beau?
Beau exclaims: I love combining wand and knife play.. the sparks jump from the blade, it's awesome!
Selaria closes her eyes and mmmms some more
Renee feels herself melt into the floor
Selaria laughs :)
Beau grins at Renee
Selaria says: You have to be careful about intermingling attachments and wands made by different vendors. These things are NOT plug n play devices when it comes to attachments.
Selaria says: again
Selaria says: I repeat
Selaria exclaims: you have to be careful about sharing attachments with different wands!
Selaria says: I've seen an attachment BLOW UP.
Renee winks at Beau
Selaria says: it isn't pretty
Renee says: ooo, wow.
Selaria exclaims: Be smart, and learn about your toy, as with anything, education is key!
Selaria exclaims: This class was intended to give an insight into the wonderful world of toys, and if something interests you, learn more about it!
Selaria exclaims: Any questions? If I can't answer them, I'll help you find the answer!
Selaria says: (i'll also be giving out references too)
Selaria says: to do your own research should you so desire
Selaria exclaims: I know it's a lot.. but the wand is sooo versatile!
Changeling asks: ?
Changeling asks: Wax vs. ceramic?
Selaria asks: yes, Changeling?
Renee says: Once you get your creativity flowing....the wand can turn you into hours and hours of entertainment.
Selaria says: well good question
Selaria nods
Selaria says: A wax core is used in older models, and I don't honestly have much experience with them other than you can't use them for long periods of time because they can 'melt' down.
Beau says: throw the wax one away
Beau smiles
Selaria nods to Beau
Selaria says: I agree.
Selaria says: References and good places to get info:
Selaria says: http://www.continue.to/violetwands
Selaria says: http://www.teslasystems.com/
Selaria says: http://www.mos.org/sln/toe/skineffect.html
Selaria says: http://violetwand.org
Selaria says: http://www.discovery.com
Selaria says: And if you do have additional questions, please ask, or email me, and if I don't know the answer, I will definitely put you in touch with someone that does :)
Selaria exclaims: I learn something neew every single day about the wand! :)
Changeling asks: Do the attachments have to be hollow and gas-filled? I know a company that does solid glas dildos...
Selaria exclaims: So if there aren't any more questions (looks at her watch), then we are done!
Renee asks: Some of the advanced techniques you've talked about....are they on the reference sites?
Selaria nods
Selaria says: yes
Selaria says: as far as branding etc and fireplay
Selaria hmms, well Changeling, for it to be a violet wand attachment, I would assume it would have
to be hollow and glass filled.
Beau smiles.. My next purchase for My wand is a dental pick
Selaria says: a solid glass dildo wouldn't carry the charge
Selaria says: ooo
Selaria says: nice
Beau says: for branding
Selaria exclaims: and no insertables! (grumbles)
Selaria nods
Kerr says: I can't imagine that a dildo would be that good for it anyway.. too much surface area
Renee has already felt a dental pick...but wasn't branded till the knife.
Selaria says: well, the tinself flogger covers a lot of surface and it's just yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmy
jaipur blinks at the use of a dental pick
Selaria asks: Is it true Beau, that you can make the branding fade/semi to perm?
Selaria says: I've never seen this live, and would love to
Renee says: Well the thing with the tinsel flogger is that there is multiple contact points...it moves over teh skin, and different parts are always contacting the skin. With something solid like a dildo, once it contacts it rarely moves
Beau says: yes, the more intense you set the wand, and the smaller diameter the pick, the more permanent:)
Selaria nods, good point :)
Kerr nods with Renee
Selaria says: mmmmm, k.
Selaria flutters at that thought :)
Selaria exclaims: So, if no more questions, the official discussion is over, but I'll hang and answer anything else! :)
Selaria exclaims: Thank you all sooo much for coming!!
Myche clapclaps.
Myche says: Thank you, Selaria, you're a great teacher.
Selaria smiles, thanks Myche :)
Changeling exclaims: Thankyou!
Renee says: Thansk Selaria. Nice to know I'm not the only wand slut.
Beau exclaims: thanks Selaria, that was great!
Selaria asks: I'm still relatively new to the wand, but I ADORE it (is it obvious?)
Selaria grins at Renee
sable gasps...i'm late =(
Selaria says: The discussion was logged btw
sable whews...you read my mind
Selaria smiles at sable (for you late timers ;))
Selaria nods
Selaria exclaims: that's what subbies do! ;)
Selaria giggles
Selaria says: Good Night and thanks for coming!
